October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month

Did you know that? Did you know that there’s a whole MONTH to let other peoples know about the awesomeness of us pit bull-type doggies?

Here’s a super great article from DogTime about 10 ways you can celebrate and educate, even if you don’t share your home with a pittie.

And here’s a Most Wonderful happy-making movie from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter that you can share to remind others that for every bad story you hear on the news, there’s hundreds of thousands of us pit bull-type doggies just living out ordinary lives with responsible owners in loving homes.

PS Animal Shelter Pit Bull Appreciation Day from Rand Larson on Vimeo.

Just yesterday when a friend asked what a pit bull was, SHE explained that the sweet, gentle dog playing with her (friend’s) nephew would be classified as a pit bull because of her big blocky head. She’s a Bull Arab X but so well behaved.

Maybe we need to bombard the media with stories of well behaved pit bulls? You are right, people focus on 1 bad story, and forget that there are 1000’s more that are good.

We didn’t know about Pittie Awareness Month, either, but it’s a GREAT idea! Mama is hoping to persuade our legislature to pass a state law next session outlawing breed specific legislation in some of our counties – including the one we live in. Ignorance must be fought or we are all condemned to live in darkness.

  21. Hi Mayzie! – long time no woof! Just wanted to say hello 😉 Belated thank you also for your lovely note about my Glaucoma Sickie. I’m sorry I haven’t commented in ages – I do swing by to catch up on what you’re up to but it’s just been really hard to always find time to leave a comment…but I hope you’re all well. I haven’t forgotten you! 🙂 Oh – and I wanted to tell you that there is a very special Pit Bull in the children’s story that Hsin-Yi is trying to write…so if we’re ever lucky enough to get it published one day, we hope that it might help to change people’s thoughts about Pit Bulls! 🙂

  22. Miss Mayzie,
I am happy to report that none of my family members have ever met a pit bull that was anything other than loving. Of course there was the little stray pittie that momma brought home overnight once. She bonded with momma immediately and kept all her other doggies out of the room, but that’s OK because the little gal went to a rescue group the next day and found a great home where she would be an only dog.

    Kisses,
    Dexter
